To live wholesomely, we need to work on our physical fitness, mental toughness, and spiritual wellness. More often, we tend to focus more on physical fitness at the expense of mental toughness. In the times we are living in today, mental toughness is important than ever. Everything from hard economic times to social media explosion and today’s sedentary lifestyle, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. With mental toughness, you can get through the hard times and rise above your challenges to achieve greatness. Creating mental toughness requires you to get out of your comfort zone and start working on your habits. It takes a lot of effort, commitment, and sustained practice.
If you’re the kind of person who wants to become great at what you do, you must develop and maintain the mental toughness that success requires. There will be ups and downs, but with daily practice, positivity and willpower, you’ll make it happen. In this article, I’m going to share some of the effective ways to create mental toughness.
Set clear and realistic goals
The first step towards creating mental toughness is establishing well-defined and achievable goals. The human brain is wired to achieve goals, and once you accomplish your first set of goals, you’ll be motivated to reach for higher goals. Setting goals restructures the brain, making it more effective.
Stop the negative self-talk
We all have the moments when we feel down on ourselves. Maybe you think you’ve made a wrong decision, or you have a feeling that you’re not making enough progress. While it can be difficult to stop a train of thoughts in its tracks, you must learn to reframe negative thoughts. Negative self-talk can damage your self-esteem and lead to mental vulnerability. Strive to be optimistic even in the face of great adversity. Learn to reframe negative thoughts like “I can’t make it” with “I can make some progress if I work hard.” Of course, you cannot eliminate all of your negative thoughts, but replacing them with optimistic thoughts will prepare you to handle more stressful experiences
Talk positively to yourself
If you’re going to create mental toughness, you’ll have to break those self-limiting beliefs and start developing a positive mindset. Studies show that a person has about 50,000 thoughts a day, and many of them repeat each day. If you can reframe the negative thoughts into positive self-talk, you’ll create the mental toughness required to accomplish your goals. Your brain will fight back, but with daily practice, you’ll be surprised how fast you will build a positive mindset.
Practice tolerating discomfort
No matter how mentally tough you are, you’ll experience different emotions. In fact, mental toughness requires you to become fully aware of your feelings without being controlled by them. Allow yourself to experience discomfort. Do not fight it as it will turn into suffering. The best way to experience discomfort without reacting to it is through meditation. The more you tolerate discomfort, the more you’ll build your mental strength.
Creating mental toughness is vital for everyone who wants to achieve greatness. Becoming mentally tough will equip you with the courage and tenacity to handle life challenges more effectively.
